The tradition of aviation in Dallas County contrasts with its rural appearance. Driving through pine plantations and row crops it is hard to imagine an Air force base located here.
The reality is much different; from its humble beginnings to its final days, Craig Air Force Base was a center of advanced technology and training, preparing thousands of young men for sorties in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. At one point Craig was the world's busiest airport with over 93,516 flight hours and 455,000 aircraft movements.
As the political climate changed both nationally and internationally so did Craig. By the time the base closed in the late 1970s it had been converted to a state of the art aircraft maintenance depot. Hangars that once served to protect aircraft from the elements were now being used to strip, paint, refurbish and inspect.
After closing, the base was sold to the Craig Field Airport and Industrial Authority (CFAIA) and began its conversion to a multifaceted industrial park. Industry leaders in aircraft manufacturing and refurbishing quickly descended ready to capitalize on the secure and centrally located facility. The flight line saw the return of many of the aircraft it once protected in need of inspection and renovation.
For over 30 years aviation businesses have thrived due to the assets and people associated with Craig. Craig's commitment to aviation is evident in its recent investments in: technology for the flight line, perimeter security, and the resurfacing of the runway and taxiways. In 2006, the final civilian and military contracts were fulfilled, and with their completion Craig is available for new enterprise.
